Gone With the Wind Wiki

Solange Prudhomme was the French maternal grandmother of Scarlett O'Hara. She was the mother of Ellen O'Hara and her sisters and the original owner of Mammy.

Biography[]

Solange was originally from Haiti, where her father was a landowner who owned many slaves. When she was young, the Haitian revolution forced them to flee to the United States of America. Solange was a beauty, who married Pierre Robillard and had three daughters: Pauline, Eulalie and Ellen (1829). They lived in Savannah, Georgia. Her slave Ruth (Mammy) cared for the three girls. It is possible she died before Ellen's 1844 marriage to Gerald O'Hara, because only her father's reaction to the union is discussed.

Personality[]

Unlike her pious, humble daughter Ellen Robillard, Solange appears to have been cold, haughty and proud. Qualities she shared with her granddaughters Scarlett and Suellen.

Mammy mentions that Solange used to wear a wet petticoat, to show off her legs to men. This is very similar to her granddaughter Scarlett wearing an evening gown to a barbecue to show off her bosom.

Trivia[]

  • The short descriptions we have of Solange make her appear very different from her daughter.
  • Of her eleven descendants (three daughters, three granddaughters, five great-grandchildren) ten are female.
  • There is a portrait of her at Tara's dining room, which appears in the film.
