Sarah "Sally" Fontaine, née Munroe (1845) is a childhood neighbour of Scarlett O'Hara. She is described as quite pretty. She is the younger sister of Alice Munroe and Lafayette Munroe and the older sister of Dimity Munroe, Letty Munroe and Hugh Munroe.
Biography[]
As one of the prettiest belles of the county (after Cathleen and Scarlett), she got engaged to Joe Fontaine in 1861, shortly before the Civil War broke out. They married before Joe enlisted and Sally gave birth to her son, Joe Fontaine Jr. in 1863.
Only months after, Sally lost her husband in The Battle of Gettysburg. She went to live at the Fontaine property, Mimosa, where she had to work the fields with her brothers-in-law and care for her mother-in-law, son and grandmother-in-law during the remaining years of the war. She was present at the funeral of Gerald O'Hara.
At one point, Sally was visited by her husband's old slave Eustis, who said something that upset Sally. In revenge, Sally's brother-in-law Tony Fontaine killed him and Jonas Wilkerson. He fled to Texas with help from fellow Klu Klux Klan member Frank Kennedy.
For convenience's sake, Alex Fontaine married his brother's widow Sally in 1871 to raise Joe on Mimosa together and keep the plantation running without slaves.
Trivia[]
- She is the same age as Scarlett, who was born in 1845. Scarlett states when she visits Joe's widow in 1865 "she has barely turned twenty). This means she is one year younger than her sister Alice, who was seventeen in 1861.
