Marcella originally auditioned for the role of Scarlett and was seriously considered for a screen test because of her "perfect figure" and "serene beauty", which matched Scarlett's description in the book. Instead, she was cast in the supporting role of Cathleen Calvert.
On set, she was Vivien Leigh's roommate and Southern dialect coach, despite being from Illinois herself. She worked together with Susan Dowdell Myrick, the film's main dialect coach.
