John Wilkes is the owner of Twelve Oaks and the father of Ashley, India, and Honey Wilkes in Gone With the Wind.

Biography

Before Gone with the Wind

Before Gone With the Wind, at unspecified points, he married (possibly a Hamilton) and has three children: Ashley, India, and Honey, and at some point the wife possibly died.

The Barbecue and the Ball

In April 1861, John over at Twelve Oaks through a barbecue and a ball, to inform his son’s engagement to Melanie Hamilton, and in the film, he tells India to greet Scarlett O'Hara.

The War And Death

John doesn’t enlist in the army for the war, most likely due to age, and remains at Twelve Oaks. In 1864, when the siege of Atlanta begins, Union troops burn most of Twelve Oaks, and John Wilkes is killed, and when returning to Tara, Scarlett, Melanie, and his new grandson, Beau Wilkes, pass by Twelve Oaks and find out he has died
