John Wilkes (1800-1864) is the owner of Twelve Oaks and the father of Ashley, India, and Honey Wilkes in Gone With the Wind.

Biography[]

John Wilkes married a Ms Burr from Macon and she bore three children: Ashley (1840), India (1842) and Honey (1845). Before the events of Gone With the Wind. Meanwhile, his sister married Colonel Hamilton and had two children: Charles and Melanie.

On April 15, 1861, Gerald O'Hara went to Twelve Oaks to buy Dilcey, the wife of his valet butler, Pork. While over at Twelve Oaks, he told Gerald that Ashley was going to marry his cousin, Melanie Hamilton.

The next day, the Wilkes family was hosting a barbecue and then a ball. At the barbecue, his daughter India is hostess.

At ball, the Civil War is due to start as during the ball, men go to enlist in the army to defeat the Yankees. John Wilkes joined the Home Guard.

In 1864, during the siege of Atlanta, Twelve Oaks is burned down, such as other homes, and during the siege John Wilkes is killed. Henry Hamilton tells Scarlett (who tells Melanie in turn) that John Wilkes died bravely, even though he didn't believe in war.

When Scarlett O'Hara, Melanie, and his grandson Beau Wilkes pass by burned down Twelve Oaks, John is seen buried with a simple wooden headstone reading: John Wilkes 1864.
