Biography[]

Joseph, or "Joe" as he was always called, grew up on the Mimosa Plantation with his parents, grandmother and two younger brothers: Alexander "Alex" and Anthony "Tony". As a child, he often played with the Tarleton family and the O'Hara girls. His father used to joke that the three Fontaine boys (Joe, Alex and Tony) should one day marry the three O'Hara girls (Scarlett, Suellen and Carreen).

As he grew up, however, Joe fell in love with Sarah "Sally" Munroe. They got engaged at her sister Alice's wedding, which is also where Joe's brother Alex and Sarah and Alice's sister Dimity started courtship. Their engagement was hastened along by the start of the Civil War in 1861. They married during Joe's few days of furlough. The next day after the wedding, Joe returned to fight in Virginia.

During Joe's second furlough, he conceives his son with Sally at Mimosa. His father dies of dysentery in Vicksburg. Joe later dies at The Battle of Gettysburg with his brother-in-law Lafayette Munroe.
