Gone With the Wind Wiki

Doctor "Doc" Fontaine was the father of Joe Fontaine, Alex Fontaine and Tony Fontaine. He was the most prominent doctor in Clayton County and master of Mimosa plantation. Like all Fontaines, he was known for his quick, murderous temper, being called a "hot-tempered little brute".

He examined Scarlett O'Hara after the birth of her first child Wade Hamilton in 1861. He failed to recognise her post-partum depression. After this, Doctor Fontaine volunteered for the army and left for the front. In 1863, Doctor Fontaine died from dysentery at the Siege of Vicksburg in Mississippi. His eldest son died shortly after in The Battle of Gettysburg.

Trivia[]

  • It is possible that his first name was Joseph, as his eldest son and grandson were named. His grandson Joe Jr. was born after his death, but born before the death of his father Joe Sr. so it would make more sense for him to be named after his grandfather.
  • His father was also a physician.
  • His character was ommitted from the film because none of his sons made an appearance and Dr Meade's role was given more prominence as a doctor.
  • Dr Fontaine was half Alabamian on his mother's side.
