In the Novel[]
A neighbor to the O'Hara's, the MacIntoshes have lineage from Ulster, Northern Ireland which would make them Scotch-Irish. They are also described as having Orangemen ancestry, which are an Irish Protestant political group. To Gerald O'Hara, these two facts immediately make him dislike them, despite the fact that they had been living in America for at least two generations and were somewhat removed from the events of their ancestors.
Angus MacIntosh is the head of the household and is noted as being the only person to not contribute money to the Confederate Troop at the beginning of the novel. They are suspected of being Abolitionists despite their actions giving no indication of this.
When Scarlett escapes from Atlanta with Wade, Prissy, Melanie and Melanie's newborn baby, she passes the MacIntosh property notably having a "mock-orange hedge" that marked the property line. Their house was burned, in ruins, and deserted. Once she arrives back a Tara, they take vegetables from the Macintosh garden.
After the war, Suellen encounters Mrs. MacIntosh and she notes that Mrs. MacIntosh is wearing nice clothing despite almost everyone else in the area being poor and wearing rags. Mrs. MacIntosh tells Suellen that her husband put in a claim with the Federal government for destroying the property of a loyal union sympathizer who had never given aid to the Confederacy.
